So I'm here now!
It's funny, I am not as homesick as I thought I was going to be... so far I have been enjoying just being in Firenze. My apartment that I share with my friend Katie is small but so friggin cute, and if you look out the window at a certain angle you get a great view of part of the city. Just walking to class you pass by things that would make any art enthusiast salivate- Ghiberti's guilded doors of Paradise, Michealangelo's David, the Ufizzi, just to name a few. Yeah, you can see why I am not having a good time. Not at all. :-) And I have not even SEEN everything yet! (However, I did see some things that I DID NOT want to see... like a guy peeing in the street. Eeeewww. But ANYWAY!)
The group that I am studying abroad with went to Rome, and we went to see some big, indimidating things- the colloseum, the Vatican (I saw the Sistene Chapel! It was so beautiful... but it didn't even seem real- The rational part of your mind makes you feel like, "of course you aren't seeing God creating Adam in person, that is just crazy talk"), the Parthenon, and this huge fountain with sea-horses and what appeared to be Neptune and some sea-horse handlers.
Italians liked to make statues of naked men, apparently. Many of the statues that you see everywhere usually involves at least one naked man.
Speaking of naked people, had my first class today... drawing. So far it's really cool. There is only a few people in it, and the teacher and the other students seem really enthusiastic and nice.
Although a lot of people that I met on this trip are nice, there seems to be a mentality with some that they are only studying abroad to take a slight break from their studies to party in mainly American bars all the time. Anthough I am not a Puritan that says that nobody should ever drink, ever- ever, it just feels like a shame... isn't there joy in learning about the new culture and meeting Italian people as well as having fun later on at night, instead of making study-abroad into College Lite? Whatever.
Anyway, I should head off now, stuff to do! More later, of course!
Chiao!

Countdown: appx 98 hours 'till departure

Right now I am just getting myself prepared for going abroad. By now, most of my friends have gone back to school, and I called a few of them tonight and realized how much I am going to miss them! They are going to class now, and seeing people after the winter break, while I am still at home... I did get to see one of my best friends from way back, though, today. She, my mom, and I ate dinner, caught up, and then watched "American Idol"... its funny to think that I won't be around to catch all the American pop culture for the months I am abroad. I recently got into the habit of thinking, whenever I see a preview for a movie or event that will premire after my departure, even if I am not particularily interested in seeing it, "geez, I won't be here for this." At least with "American Idol," I am able to see some of the really bad singers in the very beginning... I think that is the most entertaining part of the show :-)

Yesterday I went up to see my family: the grandparents, and of course the little cousins, who are as funny and adorable as ever. I used my new camera, which has a video feature, to record the girls leaving me messages and "news reports" for my time abroad. At one point in the evening, my mom talked about how she would like to have "some Italian under her belt" and my grandfather turned to me and said, "I bet you would like to have some Italian under your belt." It took me a moment to realize that, ha, ha, ha, when a member of my family becomes old enough to drink wine and join the grownup discussion, they also become old enough to be on the recieving end of dirty jokes... :-D

I just got new news to wrap my head around. The school sent out an email telling us where we will live, and I even located it on the map! Yay for Google! I will be living with a close friend from my college in the US, and near some beautiful landmarks, which is awesome!

<lj:music>Dave Matthews- The Central Park Concert</lj:music>

Happy 2nd Day of the year 2007 everyone!!!
So yeah... haven't posted in this journal for about 876076761423 years it seems... but there is a reason why I abandoned and now ressurecting it. I was required to use a livejournal account for a class a year ago (guess which one), and instead of making up a new one, I used this one, having not used it much at all. I thought it would be a little wierd updating it as the class was in session, but hey, if anyone who was in the Buffy class trips on this, my little corner of the system of tubes, welcome and hello!
And now, I will be flying to Florence, Italy to study abroad at the end of this month, and I thought that I should start this thingy up again... as not only a way to keep in touch, but to create a time capsule, a record of the things and places I see, the lessons I'll learn, and the people I'll meet and get to know better.
I admit, I'm not good at keeping journals. I tried it a couple of times, and it always ended up where I would lose interest, or get busy, and the next thing I know, its six months or a year later and I find the damn thing under a pile of something, and I don't feel like I want to write in it anymore. The most sucessful journal I kept was as a sophomore in high school, for a beginning theater class.
One thing that kept me going with that journal, besides the fact that the teacher would be grading it, was that he required that each kid try to find some sort of meaning to the activity he had us do or even to something that happens outside of class. It was kind of cool to try to actively look for and write about everyday life's hidden lessons, joys, and surprises. I'm sure there will be no shortage of those things as I head off to study in a gorgeous, old, and unfamiliar city, where I don't really know the language very well!
Anyway, I'll be looking forward to seeing where this livejournal thing goes, hopefully it will work out! Catch ya later.

The rest of my summer went reeealy well. I went on vacation with my family and little cousins, who are moving away for a year. I will miss them so much!
But I am finally back in college, and I had my first day of classes. Excuse me for sounding dorky, but wow, I am kind of psyched about it. I had my first Itallian class (such a HAPPY language! makes me think of spaghetti and bruchetta, and sunshine... mmm spaghetti!) and statistics class (not as horrible as I thought it could be...) And then, of course, there was the Buffy class, and I cannot wait to get started in doing the "artmaking" activities (aka performing parts of the show (especially from the eps "Surprise" and "Innocence" for those in the know), drawing comics, and writing fanfic). 'Tis Awesome!!
I am also excited about my art and art history courses... as well as getting back in the groove with my clubs and organizations... Seth is swimming next to me in his bowl, and I think he likes it here dispite the fact that he misses Winthrop. He has a new friend, my roomate's fish, Inuyasha.

Today I was making my lunch when I looked over at my two fish, Seth and Winthrop... and I realized that Winthrop died! I got him as a second birthday fish from my mom a couple of years ago, after my cat decided to eat the first one. Anyway, *sigh*, poor Winthrop. At least he has gone swimming in the great fishbowl in the sky.
